Cleopatra 7th, last of the Greek Ptolemaic Dynasty of Egypt, 51-30 BC, bronze 40 drachmai of Alexandria mint. She had an affair with Julius Caesar, and gave him a male heir, Caesarion. After Caesar’s assassination she became the consort of Marc Anthony in one of the most famous love stories in history. After their defeat at Actium both she and Marc Anthony committed suicide, leaving Augustus unopposed.

Agrippa, deceased 12 BC, bronze as commemorating him struck by his grandson Caligula about 38 AD. Agrippa was the first admiral of the Roman fleet, and the hero of the battle of Actium, which sealed the doom of Anthony and Cleopatra. Agrippa was heir to the Roman throne but died before Augustus.

100 BC to 29 AD pair of Judaean small bronzes, called “Widow’s Mites” in the Bible. The most complete and accurate presentation in a full color, fold over card which opens to 11 by 8 ½ inches and gives a full discussion of the ancient Judaean coins mentioned in the New Testament. The coins, as a pair inserted into the folder come with the history, certificate of authenticity, Jonathan K. Kern Co guarantee and 6 by 9 “ mailing envelope.

The time of King Arthur c 400-500 AD clipped silver siliquae of the departed Romans. These small but good silver coins are only found in Britain, and are the closest things to the coins of King Arthur. Very handy that the Roman emperor’s names are trimmed away.

Gold dinar of the Crusader kingdom of Acre, c 1098-1150 AD, possibly minted in Jerusalem. The Christians struck these pseudo-Cufic dinars to keep the locals happy until the Pope issued an edict prohibiting coins with words imitating the praises to Allah.

Huge gold bar from the Golden Fleece Spanish shipwreck, c. 1550, in the northern Caribbean. 557 grams of Spanish hallmarked 20 and 3/4 carat gold. End cut shows the removal of the “Quinto” or king’s fifth, which was the tax paid to the king of Spain. With certificate of authenticity — $17,700

1696 William III bronze halfpenny from England
Obv: GVLIELMVS DEI GRATIA (all his other coppers read TERTIVS instead of DEI GRATIA) Perhaps the die engraver thought he was working on a precious metals die, which always read "by the Grace of God".

This is apparently the third known and is a pleasing F/VG+ with soft date from uneven reverse die placement. — $4700

Gold bar recovered from the 1715 fleet shipwrecks off the coast of Florida, almost 88 grams, broken in two, unassayed or regulated after payment of the King’s “quinto” or fifth. Smuggled bars are relatively common from these shipwrecks. Broken, perhaps not by accident. Maybe the smuggler, if confronted, was planning on insisting that the broken portion was the royal tax (although a little short of 20%) and he was going to pay it as soon as possible? The unknown history: priceless.

1826 silver Erie Canal completion medal, presented to William Ireland, original box included. He was on the committee managing the project.
Obv: Posiedon and Satyr (Pan)
Rev: eagle over shield and canal panorama.
This medal attracted a lot of attention at a major coin show, and I was offered two others in trade towards this one. One was a raw nice Abt unc at $6000, and the other was a light field graffiti raw Proof 60 at $9000. Mine is for the quality and pedigree buyer. NGC Proof 64 — $12,700

1841-O quarter from the 1980s construction site hoard in downtown old New Orleans, where business people in suits grabbed handfuls of silver coins out of the mud when heavy digging equipment broke open two chests buried 20 feet down before 1842.
Near mint state, usual sloppy strike, uncleaned with original oxidation. Cool coin — $677

1859 silver thaler from Frankfurt, Germany mounted in a silver candy dish. Probably made c 1910. Rev is visible. This elegant lady was rumoured to be the mistress of the Baron Rothschild of the Frankfurt banking branch.

1878 copper electrotype wall plaque depicting all the kings of the House of Oldenberg, who ruled from 1448 to 1863 in Denmark, and at times Norway and Sweden. Uniface 10” by 12 “ with brass chain for hanging. The plaque is made from 16 medals, many signed, in fine baroque style.

War Winter Help Society 1941-42 Set of 20 colored glass, portrait frosted intaglios of famous Germans, pierced to hang (from a Xmas tree?) Kant, Mozart, Mendel, Goethe, Bismarck, and more are pictured and named. Hitler is the only one in clear white glass. These were either awards for donations, or were sold to help care for the Nazi soldier’s families. Set mounted in modern plush box, 2 notgeld from the society also included. Stunning glass work!
